What: CASTP to held legal seminar and panel discussion chaired by CASTP board member Sunny Yang, on the recent hate crime issue against Asian and Asian American, as well as practical approaches about how to prevent it and how to report them.
Why: There were nearly 3,800 hate incidents in the past year in the United States in which Asian-Americans have been targeted, with one of the latest being on March 16th, where eight people were killed in Atlanta, and among the victims, six were women of Asian descent. The United State is a country rich in diversity, but throughout the American history, Anti-Asian actions and racism are not new. While they have been existing for centuries, they are especially dangerous during the most stressful period in history. Hate leads to violence and tragedy. We must stand up and act to hate crimes, improve our commitment to diversity, and defend our rights.
As President Joe Biden said, “It’s wrong. It’s un-American. And it must stop.”

Timothy G. Swanson, Panelist
FBI Supervisory Special Agent
Timothy G. Swanson is a Supervisory Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He oversees the Public Corruption and Civil Rights squad for the FBI’s Pittsburgh Division. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh in 2020 SSA Swanson was a program manager in the FBI’s Transnational Organized Crime-Western Hemisphere Operations Unit at the Criminal Investigative Division and led the FBI’s Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Forces program at FBI Headquarters. He began his FBI career in 2007 and served for nearly ten years in the Kansas City Division working violent gang, organized crime, and drug investigations. Prior to his appointment as a Special Agent, SSA Swanson served as a police officer and detective for the Ankeny, Iowa Police Department.
Eric Olshan, Panelist
Assistant United States Attorney
Eric Olshan is an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Economic Crimes Section and serves as the Office’s Civil Rights Coordinator, Health Care Fraud Coordinator, Public Corruption Coordinator, and District Election Officer. Before joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2017, Mr. Olshan spent almost a decade as a Trial Attorney and Deputy Chief in the Public Integrity Section at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where he prosecuted public corruption and election crimes in federal districts throughout the United States. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, Mr. Olshan was a law clerk for the Honorable Richard C. Tallman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mr. Olshan is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.

2018 Congress Candidate – Pennsylvania Midterm Elections
Former Senior Deputy Attorney General, Pennsylvania’s Office of Attorney General
Pearl Kim was a candidate for Congress during the 2018 midterm elections in Pennsylvania. Prior to that Ms. Kim was appointed to the Pennsylvania’s Office of Attorney General as a Senior Deputy Attorney General. Formerly an Assistant District Attorney in the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office, Ms. Kim was Chief of the Human Trafficking Unit in the Special Victims and Domestic Violence Division.
Ms. Kim served on the Joint State Government Commission’s Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking and reported back to the PA Senate any recommendations for changes in state law, policies, and procedures and ultimately secured the first trafficking of persons conviction under Pennsylvania’s trafficking statute.
Governor Corbett and Governor Wolf appointed Pearl Kim to the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian American Affairs. The American Bar Association awarded Ms. Kim the Norm Maleng Minister of Justice Award for her efforts as a special victims prosecutor, and she was the recipient of the Government Attorney of the Year Award by the Pennsylvania Bar Association in 2015. Ms. Kim obtained her J.D. from Villanova University School of Law where she was the recipient of the Villanova Achievement Scholarship and received her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College.
